Lagos dominates squash at National Sports Festival
Team Lagos dominated both men and women’s singles in squash racket event decided yesterday at the on-going 19th National Sports Festival in Abuja. In the men’s singles final, Lanre Abdulrahman, seeded number two, defeated fourth ranked Wale Amao, also of Lagos state 10-12, 8-11, 9-11 to clinch the gold medal, while the latter settled for the silver medal. Amao had caused a stir when he sent off the top seed, Sadiq Taiwo in their quarterfinals match.
Abdulrahman said the victory was a sweet revenge as Amao denied him the Festival gold medal in 2012.“I’m happy I took my pound of flesh from Wale. He denied me the gold medal during the 18th National Sports Festival in Lagos in 2012.
“Undoubtedly, Wale is a good and skillful player, and I had to be cautious with my strokes,” Lane Abdulrahman said. He added that the forthcoming Old Trafford PSA Closed Circuit in Lagos next week would provide another opportunity for them to further trade strokes.
In the ladies singles, Yemisi Olatunji of Lagos, who is seeded number one, defeated Rofiat Abdulazeez of Kwara state (ranked number two) 3-0. The encounter was a one-sided affair, as Yemisi easily brushed Rofiat aside in 11-3, 11-3, 11-7.
Former national champion, Wasiu Sani, who is the Lagos State Squash head coach, said yesterday that hardwork and determination earned his players the victory. “We have been working hard during our closed camping in preparatory for this Festival,” he said.
