Nour
El Tayeb, Raneem El Welily, Joelle King, Tarek Momen, Simon Rösner and
Marwan ElShorbagy have all booked their places in June’s PSA World
Series Finals after guaranteeing themselves a top eight berth on the PSA
World Series Standings.
Only the top eight players on the PSA World Series Standings will
qualify for June’s PSA World Series and points for the standings are on
offer at all World Series tournaments throughout the 2017/18 season.
Egypt’s World No.3 El Tayeb claimed a second World Series title at
the Windy City Open last week, giving her the maximum 100 points on
offer as she moved up to second on the PSA Women’s World Series
Standings with 320 points, 30 points behind current leader
Nour El Sherbini, who had already qualified before the tournament.
World Champion El Welily - who has reached the finals of the U.S.
Open, Hong Kong Open and Saudi PSA Women’s Masters so far this season -
sits third, 60 points behind El Tayeb, but her semi-final finish in
Chicago last week is enough to see her qualify.
Meanwhile, New Zealand’s King, who beat El Welily to reach a maiden
World Series final in Chicago, has also qualified and the 29-year-old
will make her first ever appearance at the World Series Finals in June.
France’s Camille Serme, defending champion Laura Massaro, Egypt’s
Nouran Gohar and England’s Sarah-Jane Perry complete the top eight on
the women’s standings, while two-time winner Nicol David currently sits
15 points behind Perry and, with only two World
Series tournaments remaining this season, has a real fight on her hands
to qualify.
A semi-final finish for men’s World No.6 Momen in Chicago sees him
overtake Tournament of Champions winner Rösner to join compatriots
Mohamed ElShorbagy and Ali Farag in qualifying, ensuring all-Egyptian
top threes on both the men’s and women’s standings.
Rösner drops down to fourth, with 45 points separating him and
Windy City Open runner-up Marwan ElShorbagy in fifth and both of those
players have guaranteed their participation at the World Series Finals
2016 World Champion Karim Abdel Gawad, three-time World Champion
Nick Matthew and three-time World Series Finals winner Gregory Gaultier
take up the rest of the spots inside the top eight.
All three players sit on 105 points, while World No.3 Omar Mosaad sits in ninth, 20 points behind.
The battle for points on the PSA World Series Standings continues
next month at the El Gouna International between April 20-27 and action
from the tournament will be shown live on SQUASHTV (Rest of World) and
Eurosport Player (Europe only), while mainstream
broadcasters such as BT Sport, beIN Sports, Fox Sports Australia and
Astro will show live coverage of the semi-finals and finals.
