Egypt’s Ali Farag has overtaken World No.1 Mohamed ElShorbagy at the summit of the men’s PSA World Tour Finals Leaderboard after his title victory at the Qatar Classic last week.
Farag’s win over Germany’s Simon Rösner in the final means that he has now joined ElShorbagy in qualifying for the season-ending PSA World Tour Finals after ElShorbagy won the FS Investments U.S. Open Squash Championships last month.
The PSA World Tour Finals will take place next June and will feature both a men’s and women’s tournament. The reigning World Champions and all seven PSA World Tour Platinum winners will qualify for the prestigious event.
The remaining places are allocated to the highest ranked players on the PSA World Tour Finals Leaderboard, and points will be on offer at all PSA World Tour events during the season.
Farag and ElShorbagy have both guaranteed their spots at the tournament, while women’s World No.2 Raneem El Welily has also qualified after winning the U.S. Open alongside ElShorbagy in October.
Farag - who also reached the final of the Channel VAS Championships three weeks ago - has accumulated 6,750 points, which gives him a big lead over ElShorbagy, who currently holds 4,835 points.
Rösner stays in third ahead of Channel VAS Championships winner Tarek Momen, while New Zealand’s Paul Coll completes the top five.
Egyptian duo Mohamed Abouelghar and Karim Abdel Gawad come next in sixth and seventh, respectively, with Peru’s Diego Elias sitting in eighth place after reaching his first ever Platinum semi-final in Qatar last week.
El Welily’s total of 5,305 points is enough to see her stay top of the women’s leaderboard, while England’s Sarah-Jane Perry has moved up two places to second after reaching the final of the Carol Weymuller Open last month.
The World No.6 has 2,905 points and sits ahead of France’s Camille Serme in third, while World No.1 Nour El Sherbini and Carol Weymuller Open winner Nour El Tayeb are the other two players in the top five.
Wales’ Tesni Evans stays in sixth ahead of England’s Laura Massaro and Alison Waters, who take the final two spots inside the top eight.
The world’s top male and female players will head to Asia next for the Everbright Sun Hung Kai Hong Kong Squash Open later this month. The PSA World Tour Platinum event will be held between November 19-25.
