Top Jamaican players post early wins at Caribbean Junior Squash Champs


Reigning All Jamaica Champions Jonathan Walker, Aman Dhiman and Savannah Thomson got off to a winning start on the first day of action at the Caribbean Area Squash Association's (CASA) Junior Championships, now under way at Liguanea Club in Kingston, Jamaica.

Walker, the current All Jamaica under-19 boys' champion, had a challenging first game but eventually settled down to beat Nicholas Caddle of Trinidad and Tobago 13-11, 11-2, 11-7.

Jamaica's under-13 boys' champion Aman Dhiman cruised through his first match easily defeating Dominic Wilson of Barbados 11-2, 11-4, 11-3. Similarly, All Jamaica under-13 champion Savannah Thomson barely broke a sweat to beat Nicola De Verteuil of Trinidad and Tobago 11-4, 11-1, 11-1.

Feisty boys' under-11 contender Lukas Thomson posted two wins, taking down Nicholas Le Quay of Trinidad and Tobago 11-7, 11-8, 11-5 and Barbadian Armaan Suleman 11-6, 11-2, 11-3.

Tournament Chairman Gill Binnie said, “It's been a reasonably good day for our players and quite a few of our national champions have done well so far. the matches will get tougher as the week goes on but we are looking for some positive results as the tournament unfolds.”

Next, Lukas Thomson will take on Jayden George of OECS in the semi-finals tomorrow, Walker will face off with Alexander Cheeks of Guyana, and Savanah Thomson will do battle with Rebekah Nichols of Barbados. Dhiman will be up against Guyanese hotshot Michael Alphonso in quarter-final action.

The 2018 Caribbean Area Squash Association's Junior Championships will run until Saturday.
