PETALING JAYA: Sabah made a clean sweep of the boys and girls’ Under-18 titles at the MSSM (national schools) meet in Melaka.
Duncan Lee, the 2017 British Junior Open Under-15 runner-up, came up tops with a 12-10, 11-6, 6-11, 11-9 win over Kuala Lumpur’s Danial Nurhaqiem for the boys’ crown at the Hang Jebat Stadium yesterday.
Jessica Keng, the British Junior Under-13 winner in 2015, fought back from a 2-1 deficit to beat KL’s Noor Aina Ampandi 7-11, 11-5, 10-12, 11-8, 11-5 for the girls’ title.
“I think playing on the Malaysian Tour Squash Circuit (SSJM) this year really helped me a lot,” said 15-year-old Duncan.
“In the SSJM, I got to play against a variety of players who are older than me and I learned a lot from it.
“I was pretty confident going up against Danial as I knew the pressure wasn’t on me. I just had to stick to the basics.

“It was a good win for me because Danial is a year older. I hope to continue doing well after this.”
Jessica on the other hand admitted she got lucky against Aina.
“It wasn’t the best I played. I made so many mistakes and I hit the tin so many times,” said the 15-year-old.
“I think I got lucky but I’m happy to win. Especially with Duncan also winning so its two for Sabah.”
The East Malaysian state however fell short of a third title after Yee Xin Ying lost 7-11, 7-11, 5-11 to Kedah’s Aira Azman in the girls’ Under-15 final.
Kedah also finished with two titles with Anrie Goh beating teammate Whitney Wilson 8-11, 12-10, 11-5, 11-4 for the girls’ Under-13 crown.
