The sixth-seeded Crusaders upset No. 2 Radnor (Pa.) in Sunday’s
tightly-contested final, 4-3, to capture the Division VI crown. Canisius
won the Division IV title in 2016.
“It came down to our No. 1 player Allen Tompkins winning in the fifth game, 14-12,” Canisius coach Steve Joyce said. “We tied it at three-all and it came down to the Nos. 1. It was really about as close and exciting as it gets.”
Tompkins, a senior, finished his nationals career with a 15-1 record. Gianni Siddiqui, Will Weimer and Ryan Dynko were also victorious in the final.
Canisius opened the tournament with a 7-0 win over King (New York City) in Friday’s Round of 16, then topped No. 1 Bronx Center for Science and Mathematics CitySquash in the semifinals, 4-3, and Malvern (Pa.) in the quarterfinals, 5-2, on Saturday.
“We were seeded in the middle of the pack, so there was definitely an underdog feel,” Joyce said.
The Gators, meanwhile, won the Division V girls title via 4-3 decision over Greenwich (Conn.). Molly Wachter, Carly Coppola, Lexi Smith and Emma Lawley won their respective matches.
Nardin had a bye in the Round of 16, beat Friends School (Md.) in the quarters, 5-2, and Brearley (New York City) in the semis, 5-2.
The Nichols girls team lost to eventual Division III champion Hopkins School (Conn.) in the semifinals, 4-3, after beating Baldwin (New York City) in the Round of 16, 6-1, and Rye Country Day, 7-0, in the quarters. The Vikings won the consolation final over St. Catherine’s (Va.), 5-2, for third place.
Nichols boys won its first match in Division VI over Friends School, 4-3, but lost to Radnor in the quarters, 4-3.
Buffalo Seminary lost in the Division IV girls quarters to New Canaan (Conn.), 4-3, after beating Miss Porter’s School (Conn.), 6-1, in the Round of 16.
