Malaysian squash queen Nicol David (pic) got off to a solid start to the new year by checking into the second round of the Saudi Women’s Masters in Riyadh.
The tournament is a historic first-ever Professional Squash Association (PSA) Tour event for women in Saudi Arabia.
Nicol, with a small contingent of Malaysian supporters behind her, showed that she was right at home on court after producing a clinical performance to beat Egyptian Mayar Hany 11-4, 11-3, 11-3 in the first round on Monday.
The world No. 6 was even afforded the luxury of demonstrating her full offensive abilities as she completed the rout in just 17 minutes.
Joshna battled to a gruelling 11-9, 6-11, 13-11, 9-11, 11-5 win over Canadian Sam Cornett.
“It’s great to have the Malaysian flag in this event here in Riyadh and it’s also great to have a bit of home support.
“Mayar is a young and upcoming player from Egypt and I just stuck to what I had to do.
“I basically played solid squash while stopping her from doing what she does best,” said Nicol.
In other results, world No. 3 Camille Serme of France was all class as she defeated home wildcard entrant Nada Abo Alnaja 11-1, 11-3, 11-2.
