Defending champions Milex Eagles crash out of KPMG squash league
Defending champions, the Milex Eagles have crashed out of contention as the 2017 KPMG Squash League races to a dramatic conclusion following action on Monday night.
Meanwhile, Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) A booked a surprised spot in the semi-finals.
JDF A beat seasoned campaigners, the Yellow Dots 2-1 in their quarter final clash at Up Park Camp .
At first things appeared to be going in Yellow Dots’ favour when Shawn Wallace beat Mark Gray 21-16, 23-20, 21-16. However, Gatasheu Bonner trounced Horace Walker 21-5, 21-12, 21-11 and the military men pulled even.
Then, Darrian Barrant followed on to hold off Jamel Banton 21-16, 19-21, 21-12, 18-21, 21-8 and send JDF A through to the next round.
In contrast, tournament favourites, the Milex Eagles were eliminated 2-0 by hot contenders, Goliath.
Fielding the lethal brother team of national squad members, Julian and Stephan Morrison, Goliath turned back the Eagles, with a team comprising of regional junior champions, Akelia and Larissa Wiltshire.
Stephan Morrison dropped a game but managed to beat Larissa Wiltshire 14-21, 21-7, 21-16, 21-15. After that, Julian Morrison took care of business by defeating Akelia Wiltshire 21-16, 21-15, 21-20 and Goliath advanced.
It wasn’t all bad news for Team Milex as the Milex Eaglets beat JDF B decisively to book their spot in the semi-finals.
All Jamaica Under 19 Boys Champion, Tahjia Lumley beat Champlini Henry 21-19, 21-20, 21-20 to set the stage and then Shane Slater took his cue and defeated Jamele Sterling 20-21, 9-21, 21-19, 21-20, 21-19 in a gruelling duel.
Junior national team member, Mia Lake then came through with a 21-15, 21-14, 21-6 victory over Nicholas McAllister to complete the sweep.
In another twist, the all-star line-up of junior national team players, Levy Tax lost 2-1 to the veterans, Screaming Eagles.
Luke Roberts put the youngsters ahead when he beat Shane Murray, 21-13, 6-21, 21-18, 23-21 but then Raj Venugopal roared back to beat Tobias Levy, 21-18, 21-18, 18-21, 23-21. With the score tied, Stuart Murray came through to beat Sebastian Levy 21-12, 12-21, 21-19, 21-14.
The semi-finals of the KPMG Squash League are set for Thursday April 6 at the Liguanea Club when the Screaming Eagles will take on the Milex Eaglets and JDF A will be up against Goliath.
Tournament Director, Nathlee Boreland said, “I won’t make any predictions because we have seen so many surprises so far but all four teams that made it to the semi-finals have been playing top quality squash so I think we are in for some exciting matches.”
