All-Egyptian finals in Hong Kong Open
Two all-Egyptian finals are set to take place on Sunday after Nour El-Sherbini, Raneem El Weleily, Mohamed El-Shorbagy and Ali Farag reached the Hong Kong Open final.
The tournament is being held in Hong Kong between the 14th and 19th of November.
World No.1 El-Sherbini took 56 minutes to knock out England’s Laura Massaro 3-2 [11-7, 5-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-3] to reach her first Hong Kong Open final.
El-Sherbini managed to qualify for semis after defeating her compatriot Nouran Gohar in the quarter-finals and will face another Egyptian in the final after Raneem El-Weleily reached her third final.
El-Weleily managed to beat France’s Camille Serme 3-2 [5-11, 11-7, 11-6, 6-11, 11-6] in 56 minutes and will hope to lift the Hong Kong title for the first time after losing two finals in 2011 and 2013 to Nicol David.
It’s worth mentioning that the only Egyptian woman who had the honour of lifting the Hong Kong title was Nouran Gohar in 2016.
Meanwhile, Mohamed El-Shorbagy defeated his brother comfortably 3-0 [13-11, 11-5, 12-10] and will aim to lift his third Hong Kong title, when he faces his compatriot Ali Farag.
Farag, who managed to edge World No.1 Karim Abdel Gawad 3-1 [11-8, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7], will meet El-Shorbagy in the third final this season.
El-Shorbagy was crowned the Hong Kong Open champion in 2014 and 2015, while it will be Farag’s first Hong Kong Open final.
