Things New Squash Federation President Will Do To Revive The Game

The new President of Nigeria Squash Federation, Mr Boye Oyerinde has promised to revive the fortunes and recapture the glory days of the game within the next four years.
To achieve this, Oyerinde says the federation will give adequate attention to grassroots development.

Oyerinde made the assertion while revealing his plans for the game in an exclusive interview with 3tvonline .
“One of my vision is to develop youngsters for Nigeria squash and the national team.
”We will talent-scout, groom players from junior level — 12 , 16-19 and the different age groups, that is from the basics.
”And this we will do by putting the right structure in place, there’s none on ground at the moment.
”First, we need a database of the number squash courts in the country, as I speak to you I don’t have the numbers.
”Lagos probably have the highest number of courts in the country, there are courts also in Abuja, Kwara but we need to be specific and categorize them.
”How many clubs are social courts, military courts, government courts etcetera.
”Having identity the numbers, we need to know the state of these courts.
”Are they use able? do these courts need major or minor overhaul? and how much would it cost to renovate them?
”Whilst we are doing this, we will simultaneously identity the schools around these facilities in order for us to be able to attach the young one to these facilities.
”Having identify the facility and how much it will cost to fix them, we will then have 5 to 6 schools around to utilize this renovated court for training.
Furthermore, he says: ”We’re going to then source for training kits for the court instead of the schools, this will reduce our cost.
”A coach and a referee will also be attached to the court.
”Going further, the schools will be ask to schedule playing time for interested student-who will be trained by the same coach.
”This will make us have a stream of new and upcoming players, these players will also be monitor by the federation, he posits.
The federation helmsman adds: ”Since we have six(6) geographical zones in the country, we will organise zonal championship for these youngsters.
”This will help us to feed the national team in the long run and give us an opportunity to build a database of junior players (U-16, 19) boys and girls.

Capacity Building For Coaches & Referees
According to the NSF president, the board will also develop the capacity of Nigeria coaches and referees.
He notes that the federation will expose these officials to latest techniques of the game through internationally acceptable certification development training programmes.
”We really need to have certified officials in Nigeria to be able to handle certain level of tournament.
”In 2013 and 2014, when the Lagos International Classic was organize, on both occasion we had to bring in officials from outside the country.
”One from Zimbabwe in 2013 and another from Pakistan in 2014, when we should have easily develop our officials, this we intend to change.
”We will figure out what kind of coaching programmes we will expose our coaches to.
”Also, we will decide how long such training will be, determine whether it will be cost effective to bring in the experts to train the coaches and referees locally.

How To Improve Nigerian Players PSA Ranking
Oyerinde, who was in charge of the 2013 and 2014 Lagos International Squash Classics says the federation will also work assiduously to enhance the ranking of Nigerian players on PSA world ranking.
To achieve this, he says Nigeria needs to support its national athletes and expose them to more high-level tournaments.
”To have Nigeria players in PSA world ranking means they have to be playing PSA sanctioned tournament locally or internationally.
”At present there are no standard national team, no training programmes or structured avenue to monitor these players progress.
”There are no strategy on how these players ranking can be improved.
”These players play all sort of tournament that have little or no bearing on their ranking.
”We have good players in Nigeria but they need to be guided and supported by the federation.
”If they are properly guided, it will be easier for them to know which tournament will improve their ranking or not.
Giving an example of how Egypt is supporting its players, Mr. Oyerinde affirms that, this kind of success story is what NSF want to replicate in Nigeria.
”Most times when our players go out to play these tournaments (one or two of them)-it is against the world and that should not be the case.
”When we had our tournament in 2013 and 2014, we had Egyptians come in droves.
”They came with their federation president, coach and physiotherapist- they had a team behind their players.
”This is the kind of structure programme the NSF intend to replicate in Nigeria.
”In our case, we will also attach a psychologist, to put the players in the proper frame of mind.
”If not, it will be difficult for our players to get better ranking on PSA world ranking.
”But if we can sustain this approach in the next 4years, one or two of them could be in the top 100, and top 50 in the next 5-8 years.

Reconciliation of NSF Stakeholders
On the question of disunity among stakeholders prior to the election, Mr. Oyerinde says the different factions within the federation have since close ranks.
”That’s in the past now. After my election, I have reach out to lot of parties within the system, everybody is on board now, he posits.
”My vice-president (Umaru Aliyu) and other executive members have also reach out to a number of people within the squash community.
”And I must confess the response has been encouraging.
”Remember, all the states were represented in the just concluded election.
”I believe change has indeed come to Squash and all those issues are now history, Mr Oyerinde declares.

PSA Foundation Partners with England Squash and Rackets Cubed

The Professional Squash Association Foundation (PSAF) have announced a partnership with England Squash and Rackets Cubed that will see the three organisations work together to enhance grassroots participation in squash throughout the United Kingdom.

A UK registered charity, Rackets Cubed provides after-school enrichment programmes for disadvantaged inner-city children at the Roehampton Club in South West London. Founded in 2016, Rackets Cubed seeks to provide inner city children with significant extra-curricular support through an integrated sports, educational and nutrition programme with their vision driven by increasing evidence that active and healthy children behave and perform better in school.

The partnership between the PSAF, England Squash and Rackets Cubed will aim to engage with a broad range of young people to get them active within the sport, whilst jointly promoting the game within the wider squash community. All three parties will also work together to help tackle social issues and support the health and educational needs of disadvantaged young people involved in the sport.

“We are delighted to partner with England Squash and Rackets Cubed and hope that this will help grow more awareness of the positive impact that these projects do and go beyond the squash community, said PSA Marketing and Foundation Manager Adriana Olaya.

“Squash can bring great benefits to the physical and mental well-being of young people in terms of self-esteem and confidence and can be played all year around. We believe that by aligning the national governing body, the professional players’ association and a specifically focused sport based charity, like Rackets Cubed, we can have a tangible impact on the community and share the benefits of squash with a bigger audience.”

“Over time we hope to create a core group of ‘Partnership Hubs’ that can act as regional centres to drive this activity around the UK and see this as a long-term project that will continue to grow and benefit over time.”

Former World No.3 Alison Waters, patron of Rackets Cubed, said:  "I recently moved to be based at the Roehampton Club and the people working there have done an amazing job with the Rackets Cubed project so far.

"It's fantastic to see the impact and difference this programme has had on children in the local area so far and I'm really excited to see how the project continues to grow moving forward."

England Squash CEO, Keir Worth, added: “We are thrilled to partner with the Professional Squash Association Foundation and Rackets Cubed, and create meaningful opportunities for young people to pick up a racket.”

PSA Foundation Becomes Official Charity and Unveils New Website

The Professional Squash Association (PSA) is thrilled to announce that its PSA Foundation has become an officially recognised charity in the United Kingdom after receiving confirmation from the Charity Commission for England and Wales - and a new website and logo has been unveiled to coincide with the announcement.

The PSA Foundation is the charitable arm of the PSA and was created with a clear mission statement: To support and grow squash globally through community involvement, elevating equal opportunity and fostering player wellbeing.

Over the past 18 months, the PSA Foundation has already spearheaded a number of charitable endeavours, making a significant difference in the squash community across the globe.

The Foundation’s hugely successful ‘ReBound’ drives have seen squash equipment provided to over 500 children involved in urban outreach programmes in India, Colombia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Nigeria - an initiative which has been instrumental in providing children in disadvantaged communities with access to recycled squash gear.

Through the support of ‘ReBound’, South African Urban Squash programme Egoli Squash was able to compete on the international stage for the first time ever last November and sent two players to play in Zimbabwe after ‘ReBound’ provided clothing, equipment and transportation costs.

And during March’s Allam British Open, over £4,000 was raised for 11-year-old squash player Sumner Malik, who has been diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) - a rare form of brain tumour - through the support of the PSA Foundation.

The PSA Foundation is also committed to helping current players adapt to a life after squash and held its inaugural post-squash career day during this year's Canary Wharf Classic, where speakers from across several businesses were on hand to offer their advice and tips to players on how to successfully transition from the professional circuit to a more traditional career path once their playing days are over.

"We are delighted that the PSA Foundation is now an officially recognised charity in the United Kingdom and we are committed to creating a thriving and sustainable environment for squash players to flourish," said PSA Marketing and Foundation Manager Adriana Olaya.

"Our professional players are the cornerstone of the future of professional squash and they work hard in promoting it and making the sport as exciting as possible. Their wellbeing and guaranteeing a healthy and sustainable career for them is one of our main objectives.

"Through the PSA Foundation, we are determined to make a lasting impact in the lives of all of our players, regardless of age, gender or precedence. Together we can protect the heritage of squash and inspire the next generation of players.”

PSA Chief Executive Alex Gough said: "We welcome the PSA Foundation’s new status as an official charity and are focused on increasing player education, developing the sport through community and grassroots programmes and offering equal playing and earning opportunities across both genders.

"As one of the few sports that has a joint Men’s and Women’s Tour, we have been advocating for equal opportunity for years. This is naturally one of our core objectives as we ultimately look to achieve parity in income, which will help to drive the sport forward."

In addition to confirming its status as an official charity, the PSA Foundation is also delighted to unveil its new website, where squash fans can find more information and stay up-to-date on all of the Foundation’s initiatives: www.psafoundation.com
