World Champion Gaultier Leads Plethora Of International Gold Medalists In Men's NetSuite Open Draw

2015 World Champion Gregory Gaultier will go toe-to-toe with three-time World Champion and Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist Nick Matthew, Pan American Gold Medalist Miguel Angel Rodriguez, Asian Games Gold Medalists Saurav Ghosal and Max Lee and and Commonwealth Games Silver Medalist James Willstrop when the 2016 NetSuite Open gets underway on September 27 in one of the most competitive ever editions of the PSA M100 tournament,

In what promises to be a compelling battle for the title, 2014 winner Gaultier will be hoping to regain the silverware ahead of a field that includes seven of the world's top ten players - with 14 nations in total represented in the draw.

“We are delighted to have so many of the world’s top players competing in the 2016 NetSuite Open in what looks certain to be one of the most competitive and entertaining editions of the eight-year-old PSA Tour championship,” said tournament promoter John Nimick.

“While we are very fortunate that players like Gaultier, Matthew and James Willstrop have made San Francisco a regular stop on their schedules, we are equally excited to welcome some of the most talented up-and-coming players in the world this year to create a draw that will have West Coast fans packing in around the all-glass NetSuite Challenge court once again.

 The world’s four best golfers – Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson and Jason Day – who are all skipping the Olympics.
Rory McIlroy was unusually blunt when explaining why he won’t be travelling to Rio this summer, but it doesn’t surprise me one bit that the world’s top four male golfers – Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and McIlroy – have withdrawn from the Olympics. In 2009 and then again in 2013, having bent over backwards to impress and convince the IOC, us squash players were snubbed for the Games. In some respects I didn’t blame the committee for going with the big timers, but the odds were always going to be against the golfers turning up.

For McIlroy to say so flippantly that he “didn’t get into golf to try to grow the game” shows that some sports, and the personalities who front them, exist in completely different stratospheres to the rest of us. The Olympics barely registers as an exhibition tournament for the top golfers, but we would give our other arms to be in Rio, something we have repeatedly uttered to anyone who listens.

Rory McIlroy will watch ‘the stuff that matters’ at Olympics – not golf
It was difficult to listen to McIlroy speak so apathetically, certainly for Laura Massaro, England’s World Series champion, who expressed disdain at McIlroy’s “unacceptable” comments. Perhaps he wasfour only being honest and maybe it’s what the IOC need to hear. They should be held accountable for prioritising a second-rate golf contest over the many willing, enthusiastic athletes from a range of sports around the world.

We could have predicted in 2013 that the top golfers wouldn’t show their faces at Games scheduled just after the Open and the PGA Championship, and in the build-up the Ryder Cup. The golf authorities must have been dreading the day one of their players came out with it. And yes, for the record, I’m unconvinced that it has anything to do with Zika.

Every professional squash player was behind our bid, which cost us thousands upon thousands of pounds – money we didn’t have. We assembled a slick bid, produced fancy promo videos and practically took bloody courses in public speaking! And we did all this between training sessions, making a living and seeing our families.

Every photo opportunity we could take, we took. We (the players, not just our administrators) sent posters and cards to every IOC delegate we could contact, saying we would be totally committed to competing. We kept hearing that having the world’s best players support the bid was imperative, so we all made our desire to compete very clearer. I heard so many players saying that “the Olympics would be our pinnacle” so many times in interviews that it became funny. When you stop to think about it, it’s not very kind to the venues that host superb events that support our sport year after year and decade upon decade, but we really meant it.

Nicol David has won eight world championship titles and she wanted to be at the Olympics so badly she began conducting her own campaigns. She worked tirelessly to promote the cause, even taking to the streets of Kuala Lumpur to lead the other players in flash mobs.

 Dick Pound, the former IOC vice-president, said squash meets all the requirements necessary for an Olympic sport.
The Professional Squash Association has issued an upbeat assessment of its future despite the sport’s latest Olympic snub.

Squash missed out on inclusion for the Tokyo 2020 Games on Wednesday as the International Olympic Committee voted to add five new sports to the programme. It is the latest in a series of knock-backs for the authorities and players of the racket sport, who have long campaigned for Olympic status.

Alex Gough, chief executive of the PSA, said: “The Olympic Games should be the pinnacle of any athlete’s career and inclusion in the Tokyo 2020 Games would have been a defining moment for squash and our athletes.


“To know that dream has been taken away from our players once again is disappointing for all involved, but not unexpected. Throughout the course of the last decade we have addressed all of the concerns the IOC have put forward and as a result the sport is in its strongest position ever.

“We have transitioned into a burgeoning global sport that is now broadcast in almost 100 countries worldwide and have witnessed increases in player earnings by over 20% so far in the past year alone.

“We have one of the cleanest drug records of any professional sport in the world and are a sport that is played in over 180 countries – boasting a truly global footprint.

These are all elements that everyone in the sport can feel truly proud of and we are buoyed by the strides we continue to take and we are committed to continuing that journey irrespective of the Olympic Games.”

Squash lost out to golf and rugby union sevens in a vote for 2016 and to wrestling for 2020 when the combat sport was forced to reapply. In this latest ballot it was beaten by baseball/softball, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing.

Dick Pound, a former IOC vice-president, said he was “very disappointed” squash had not made it as it “meets everything we would like in an Olympic sport”.

Squash has future bright despite Olympic exclusion, claims PSA chief executive

Professional Squash Association (PSA) chief executive Alex Gough has claimed the future of squash is bright even after the latest blow to the sport’s Olympic aspirations.

There is anger within the sport that it has been overlooked for Tokyo 2020, who added baseball and softball, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing to the Olympic programme.

The decision was confirmed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at its Session in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday (August 3).

Squash had originally been among the sports hoping to win a place at Tokyo 2020 - along with the sports eventually added and roller sports and wushu - but had been overlooked at the IOC Session in Buenos Aires in September 2013.

Then, the IOC decided to keep wrestling in, overturning a recommendation from the IOC Executive Board that it should be axed following Rio 2016.

But, following the adoption of Agenda 2020, Japanese organisers were allowed to nominate which sports they wanted included on the programme.

Squash, however, was overlooked.

It was the third consecutive Olympics that squash's campaign had been unsuccessful following earlier bids for 2012 and 2016.

"The Olympic Games should be the pinnacle of any athlete’s career and inclusion in the Tokyo 2020 Games would have been a defining moment for squash and our athletes," said Gough.

"To know that dream has been taken away from our players once again is disappointing for all involved, but not unexpected."

Gough added: "We were naturally disappointed in 2013 when the IOC chose to re-instate wrestling during a period of time when squash appeared to be a front-runner for Olympic inclusion, but throughout the course of the last decade we have addressed all of the concerns the IOC have put forward and as a result the sport is in its strongest position ever.

“We have transitioned into a bourgeoning global sport that is now broadcast in almost 100 countries worldwide and have witnessed increases in player earnings by over 20 per cent so far in the past year alone.

“As a sport, squash is committed to driving forward equality, both in revenue earning potential and playing opportunities, across both sexes and the professional sport is now administered by one unified governing body across the men's and women's games.

"We have one of the cleanest drug records of any professional sport in the world and are a sport that is played in over 180 countries - boasting a truly global footprint while our players, who regularly cover over four kilometres per match, are amongst the fittest athletes in the world and we are a sport that can be enjoyed equally at beginner level and elite.

PSA Sign Multi-Year Deal with Eleven Sports Network

The Professional Squash Association (PSA) is delighted to announce a multi-year agreement with Eleven Sports Network that will deliver world-class squash to Singapore and Taiwan.

The agreement, reached in partnership with Broadreach Media, means that the semi-final and final stages of all PSA World Series tournaments over the course of the long term agreement will be broadcast live on Eleven Sports Network, in addition to extended tournament highlights to augment their coverage of the PSA World Tour.

Squash will feature alongside other top-class sporting action, including NFL, NBA, MMA, ATP Tennis and much more.

"We are pleased to have signed a deal with Eleven Sports Network which will allow us to enhance our visibility and exposure in both Singapore and Taiwan," said PSA Chief Executive Alex Gough.

ElShorbagy Equals Ashour in Unchanged Men’s Top 20 Rankings

Egypt’s Mohamed ElShorbagy has retained his place at the summit of the PSA Men’s World Rankings for an eighth successive month and a 21st month overall - equalling the amount of time that long-term rival Ramy Ashour topped the rankings between 2010-2013.


The rivalry between ElShorbagy and Ashour has lit up the PSA World Tour in recent years, with their 2014 World Championship final clash being dubbed as one of the greatest matches of all time.


ElShorbagy, whose victory over Ashour in May’s British Open final ended a four-match winless streak against his enigmatic compatriot, broke Ashour’s record for the highest ever points average in April and will look to surpass the three-time World Champion once more next month.


An unchanged top 10 features five other Egyptians, with Omar Mosaad at No.3, ElShorbagy’s brother, Marwan, at No.6 and Karim Abdel Gawad, Ali Farag and Tarek Momen at No.8, No.9 and No.10, respectively.


World Champion Gregory Gaultier stays at No.2, while England’s Nick Matthew remains at No.4. Colombia’s Miguel Angel Rodriguez and Frenchman Mathieu Castagnet are the other non-Egyptians in the top 10 and have respective rankings of No.5 and No.7.


Elsewhere, Ashour maintains his No.12 ranking, while compatriot Fares Dessouky sits at No.15.  English duo James Willstrop and Daryl Selby cap off the top 20 at No.19 and No.20, respectively.


Lower down the rankings, Mexico’s Fernando Magdaleno is the biggest riser, with his surprise semi-final finish at the BTMI Barbados Open seeing him move up 98 places to No.336.


England’s Laurence Green and American Spencer Lovejoy have also rocketed up the World Rankings. Green enjoys a 94-place rise to No.360, while Lovejoy has moved from No.401 to No.318.

SQUASHTV Set for Biggest Season Ever

The Professional Squash Association (PSA) have confirmed that the upcoming 2016/17 PSA World Tour season will see more live tournaments than ever before broadcast on SQUASHTV and Eurosport Player, the official home of live and on-demand squash.

Over 450 matches, spread across 20 tournaments, will be broadcast throughout a breathtaking season of world-class squash that will see new tournaments such as the Open International de Squash de Nantes, the Al Ahram International - held in front of the stunning Great Pyramid of Giza - and the Wadi Degla Women’s Open join the SQUASHTV calendar alongside some of the world’s most prestigious tournaments including the Delaware Investments U.S. Open, both the Men’s and Women’s World Championships, the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions and the Allam British Open.

The first live SQUASHTV tournament of the season will be the Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Open, which begins on Tuesday August 23, with nine other events, including the Wadi Degla PSA Men’s World Championship, also being broadcast before the end of 2016.

"We have worked tirelessly to improve every element of SQUASHTV over the past 12 months and are delighted to showcase our world-class sport on an even bigger scale next season," said PSA Chief Operating Officer Lee Beachill.

Hosts Australia Seeded For Double Gold In Darwin World Doubles

 Hosts Australia are predicted to take gold in two of the three events in the 2016 WSF World Doubles Squash Championships in Darwin next month according to the seedings announced today by the World Squash Federation – while Queenslander Rachael Grinham is expected to become the first player in the sport’s history to win gold in three successive championships.

The championships, featuring Men’s, Women’s and Mixed events, will take place at the Darwin Squash Centre in the Northern Territory capital city from 15–18 August.

Grinham, the 39-year-old former world number one, will partner Cameron Pilley, the world No.14 from New South Wales, in the Mixed Doubles.  Winner of the World Mixed title in 2004 in India in 2004 with David Palmer, and the 2006 gold medal on home soil in Melbourne in 2006 partnering Joseph Kneipp, Grinham is also the reigning Commonwealth Games Mixed Doubles champion after claiming the 2014 title in Scotland, again with Palmer.

Pilley also struck gold in Glasgow in the Men’s Doubles – with Palmer – and reached the 2006 World Mixed final (with Amelia Pittock) where he lost out to his 2016 partner Grinham.

Pilley is bidding for a Darwin double as top seed in the Men’s Doubles, with left-hander Ryan Cuskelly.  Also a New South Welshman, Cuskelly is ranked 16 in the world.

Grinham is seeded to reach the Women’s Doubles final, with Brisbane-based world No.21 Donna Urquhart – but it is the Indian pairing Joshna Chinappa & Dipika Pallikal who are firm favourites for gold after becoming the Commonwealth Games champions in 2014 against the odds.

Both sharing India’s highest-ever world ranking of 10, Chinappa & Pallikal would become India’s first ever world squash champions.

Colombia will be making their World Doubles debut.  Following their Pan American Games Men’s Doubles title success last year in Canada, Andrés Herrera & Juan Camilo Vargas will be appearing in the Darwin championship for the first time, where they are the fifth seeds.  Compatriot Miguel Angel Rodriguez, the world No.5 renowned for his spectacular diving around the court, will be bidding to cause an upset in the Mixed championship, where he and partner Catalina Pelaez are the No.6 seeds.

2014 Commonwealth Games stars Alan Clyne & Greg Lobban, the local pair who thrilled the crowds by making the bronze medal play-off in Glasgow, lead the Scottish bid for success where they are second seeds in the Men’s Doubles.

But the Scots may well have to overcome third-seeded New Zealand pairing Paul Coll & Campbell Grayson to make the Men’s final.

Early action in the three championships will take place in pools, before reaching the semi-finals on Wednesday 17 August and the finals the following day.

AUSTRALIA ANNOUNCE TEAM FOR WORLD DOUBLES SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIP

Australia have become the latest nation to confirm their team for the upcoming World Doubles Squash Championship with World No.14 Cameron Pilley spearheading the defending champion’s attempts to retain their title between August 15-18 in Darwin, Australia.

Pilley, a two-time Commonwealth Games Doubles gold medalist, will line up with 2007 World Champion Rachael Grinham in the Mixed Doubles event, while World No.16 Ryan Cuskelly will team up with ‘Pistol Pilley’ in the Men’s event.

Two-time World Champion David Palmer will also compete for Australia alongside World No.21 Donna Urquhart in the Mixed Doubles, while World No.57 Rex Hedrick will join Palmer in the Men’s Doubles.

The Women’s Doubles will see Grinham and Urquhart partner up, while World No.38 Christine Nunn and World No.46 Sarah Cardwell will also join forces.

Australia’s extensive experience, which sees five Commonwealth Games gold medals shared between the team, will be backed up by three-time Women’s World Champion Michelle Martin, who will be travelling with the team in a coaching capacity.

“We are very excited about the teams we have been able to put together for this prestigious event,” said Squash Australia High Performance Manager Stewart Carson.

“We had such a successful Glasgow Commonwealth Games campaign, and it’s fantastic that all of our gold medalists will be playing on home soil against the world’s best.”

New Zealand, meanwhile, have entered World No.31 Paul Coll, World No.42 Campbell Grayson, World No.9 Joelle King and World No.67 Amanda Landers-Murphy.

Coll will pair up with King in the Mixed event, with Grayson joining Landers-Murphy.

Scotland have also announced their team after a Scottish Doubles Selection process that saw Alan Clyne, Greg Lobban, Douglas Kempsell and Kevin Moran chosen to represent their country.

The selection process saw six teams enter the tournament, with two pools of three teams. Clyne and Lobban took the title courtesy of a 2-0 final win over Kempsell and Moran.

“I’m very happy to win this first tournament with my new partner, Greg,” Clyne said.

“I am happy with the way that we played and we worked well as a team. This all bodes well for Australia and we can’t wait to get going. There will be some good teams in this event but I am really delighted to be playing.”

Meanwhile, Peter Creed, Joel Makin, Tesni Evans and Jenny Haley will perform for Wales, with Creed and Evans teaming up in the Mixed Doubles alongside Makin and Haley, who will provide the other pair.

India boast top 20 players Dipika Pallikal and Joshna Chinappa, who won gold in the Women’s Doubles event during the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and they will aim to be India’s first ever squash World Champions.

World No. 17 Saurav Ghosal, the man who recently broke the record for 11 Indian National title wins, is paired up with Pallikal in the Mixed event, while Chinappa will team up with Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu.

Malaysia are also taking part, with Nafiizwan Adnan and Mohd Syafiq Kamal forming one partnership in the Men’s event, while Ivan Yuen and Sanjay Singh Chal will also be involved.

The Women’s event sees the Arnold sisters, Delia and Rachel, team up, with Aika Azman and Teh Min Jie also in action.

A pairing of Delia and Singh Chal will feature in the Mixed event, with Rachel and Kamal joining forces.

Andres Herrera and Juan Camilo Vargas form a pairing in the Men’s event for Colombia, while Catalina Pelaez and Laura Tovar will team up in the Women’s.

Fan-favourite and World No.5 Miguel Angel Rodriguez will also be appearing in Darwin and he will partner Pelaez in the Mixed event.
