(Squash) Nicol David warms up for new season in SRAM Invitational

Eight-time world champion Nicol David heads a strong cast for the SRAM Women's Squash Invitational which begins at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday.

The former World No 1 is one of four top-10 players who will feature in the five-day tournament, a warm-up event ahead of the start of the 2016-17 PSA Tour season.

Also in the six-woman field alongside World No 4 Nicol are Egypt's Omneya Abdel Kawy, New Zealand's Joelle King, Joshna Chinappa of India, England's Jenny Duncalf and national champion Delia Arnold.

Eight-time world champion Nicol, who is drawn with World No 10 Chinappa and Duncalf in the group stage, said she is happy to get a chance to play on home soil again after reaching the World Championship quarter-finals at the same venue in April.

"The initiative to have a first-ever invitational event is a great addition to the Malaysian squash calendar as we have always hosted events in July," said Nicol, referring to the Malaysian Open which was last held in 2014.

"We have the top women players here. I'm really excited to compete in this event and looking ahead to some great matches."

The opening matches on Wednesday will see Nicol taking on World No 14 Duncalf and followed by 18th-ranked Delia facing No 8 Abdel Kawy.

After three days of group stage play, the semi-finals follow on Saturday with the final and placing matches on Sunday.

Nicol is using the tournament as part of her preparation for the new season when she competes at the Hong Kong Open in August.

"I hope the supporters come to cheer us on and enjoy the high quality matches coming up next week," added Nicol.

Having spent four weeks training in Amsterdam with her coach Liz Irving before arriving in Kuala Lumpur, Nicol will then head to Brisbane and Melbourne for more training and exhibition matches during the Australian Open.
